Acquia DAM is the former Widen Collective, which Acquia acquired in 2021 when Widen served more than 700 customers from Madison, Wisconsin and London. Acquia, founded in 2007 by Drupal creator Dries Buytaert and majority owned by Vista Equity Partners since 2019, is headquartered in Boston with European offices in Reading and Ballerup. The DAM is sold standalone and as part of Acquia's digital experience portfolio, so buyers do not need to run Drupal.
The product covers the core brand team needs: AI tagging, alt text and duplicate detection at upload, natural language search, branded portals, locked-layout templates, approval workflows, rights and expiry rules, and asset analytics. Entries and product catalogues tie specifications and attributes to assets, which gives light PIM functions for manufacturers. The July 2026 release added a read-only MCP server so assistants such as Claude, Microsoft Copilot Studio or ChatGPT can search assets and fetch CDN embed URLs under existing permissions.
For European buyers, the verified option to store, process and back up data in AWS EU West and EU Central is a practical advantage over vendors that keep regions vague. Natural language search is optimised for English, which matters for multilingual libraries. Acquia DAM typically competes with [Bynder](vendor:bynder), [Aprimo](vendor:aprimo) and [Sitecore Content Hub](vendor:sitecore-content-hub), and its product catalogue features make it a credible option for manufacturers that are not yet ready for a dedicated PIM.
