Extensis, founded in 1993 in Portland, Oregon, developed Portfolio as its DAM product alongside its font management software. Monotype acquired Extensis in November 2024, and on 9 March 2026 Axle AI announced it had acquired Portfolio. The product keeps its name under Portfolio DAM, LLC, a new Axle AI division in Boston, and existing contracts, licensing and pricing models carry forward. Extensis and Monotype now concentrate on fonts. For buyers this means a smaller, more focused owner whose core business is media asset management.
Portfolio runs on a server in the customer's network or on private cloud instances on AWS, Azure or OVH, and catalogues network storage and cloud buckets in place. Features include batch tagging, custom metadata, automated workflows for metadata entry and approvals, video previews, LDAP single sign-on, DropZone web uploads, a REST API and Web Builder for branded sharing sites. Drag-and-drop works into Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator and Microsoft Office. A 4.1.1 beta in April 2026 added security updates and Windows 10 and 11 desktop deployment.
Self-hosting is Portfolio's main appeal in Europe, since data stays where the customer puts it. The trade-off is AI: on-premise automatic keywording is listed as coming soon, while SaaS rivals already ship it. Buyers should compare it with Daminion and ResourceSpace for self-hosting, and ask Axle AI for a dated roadmap. Organisations with strict data sovereignty rules, such as public bodies or manufacturers with closed networks, gain the most from this model.
