Picturepark overview

Picturepark is now a product line inside Fotoware. The Swiss company, an early pioneer that launched a cloud-based DAM in 1998, released its API-first Picturepark Content Platform in 2019 and was acquired by Fotoware in June 2022 to strengthen Fotoware in the DACH region and in retail, manufacturing and e-commerce. In 2025 the platform was renamed Fotoware Alto, and in November 2025 picturepark.com merged into fotoware.com. Buyers should evaluate it as a Fotoware product.

Fotoware Alto is the structured, integration-first option in Fotoware's portfolio, positioned beside Fotoware Veloz, the classic DAM. Alto offers strictly structured metadata and taxonomy, relational data and master data management, rule-based automation triggered by metadata or lifecycle status, licence-driven publishing and revocation, AI auto-tagging, a guest portal, microsites and embeds, a REST API and built-in CDN caching with focal point resizing. The so what: Alto suits organisations that treat assets as structured content feeding commerce, CMS and PIM systems.

The Alto team still works from FotoWare Switzerland AG in Baden, while Fotoware AS is headquartered in Oslo and owned by Viking Venture since 2020. Fotoware products run on Microsoft Azure. Historic Picturepark customers named by Fotoware include UEFA, Breitling and Faber-Castell. Alto competes with Pimcore and censhare where structured product content matters, and with CELUM in DACH enterprise DAM selections, where its headless design is the main point of difference.

Strengths

  • API-first, headless architecture with strictly structured metadata, taxonomy and relational data.
  • Rule-based automation that publishes or revokes assets according to lifecycle and licensing rights.
  • Built-in CDN caching and focal point resizing for channel delivery.
  • Backing of the larger Fotoware group, with the original Swiss team still guiding Alto in Baden.

Considerations

  • The Picturepark brand is retired; contracts, support and roadmap now sit with Fotoware.
  • Fotoware runs two DAM products (Alto and Veloz), so buyers should confirm which one fits their use case and how each is developed.
  • EU hosting regions and security certifications for Alto are not stated explicitly on the vendor site.

Best for

Retail, manufacturing and e-commerce organisations in Europe that need a headless DAM with structured metadata feeding commerce and CMS systems.
